Well said, I agree with both suggestions. 1, voting with your feet and secondly, being just as excited about great service as you do about bad service. The easiest time to do this is right away but occasionally reflecting for awhile or "calming down" before you respond is prudent.

Have been to this spot.
Nice spot on Throop in Bed Stuy. Now known as "Stuyvesant Heights" . While working in BK, I would make it my business to get over there to get my Turkey and Cheese on a croissant, yeah great with their coffee. Still this is a nice clean well lit ans well run location with fresh foods and good coffee. Near the train and bus. There are many spots in Bed Stuy since the mini gentrification, however, only a few that are well run with an updated look and feel. Stop by, check for yourself.

Now with technology and the use of computers it is very easy to buy from Black owned beauty stores, many have both an online and physical store. In fact, there is a facebook group called www.facebook.com/BlackBeautySuppliers . There I was able to find Black owned stores, not only in my area but also online. There is no excuse anymore to buy from Asians or arabs.

I always buy Black no matter what. If the experience isn't great, then I offer ways to make it better. I refuse to give my dollars to people that do not look like me. I also feel as though Black businesses on a whole are much better and more professional than other businesses ran by other ethnicities. Black people are been treated very poorly in Asian and white stores(acting like you are stealing, harassment, poor service) yet I rarely hear anyone complain too much about them. That, or I hear the 'you know how it is' statement. In fact, some go as far as to BUY anyway, to "prove" they can. That isn't proving anything. You are just making them richer. Make your own people richer and in turn it will make you richer. You can create more jobs for one another and you won't have to look to a white or any other race for a job.

The only way our economic status will change and we gain real power is by investing, buying, and spending with each other. We can stand on our own.

Thank you for you! This site was built to take the mystery out of finding black businesses. In time we will accomplish that. I love the paying it forward/passing the baton, point as well.

I hear you. Your points are true for some but not all. This article was written to separate experiences from expectations. We've all had bad experiences in several facets of our lives. It's wise of us to treat each new experience for exactly what it is: a new experience.

I appreciate the comment!

I totally agree with telling the business where they're slipping. That communication is key- otherwise how else will they people know. It's a HUGE example of groupthink when absolutely no one says anything.

I like the point about people not knowing what good service is. I didn't know what exceptional service was until I worked for Nordstrom years ago. But most people -one would think- should be able to feel when something's a little off about how they are being treated.

Thanks for adding on!

I really love this article....Stop treating BOB's like the Ex who cheated on you. I think that the information in the article is right on point. Wake up my people we spend more money annually than the GNP of most small countries.

Let's stop talking about it and be about supporting one another in business as well as all of our other positive endeavors. I SURE THAT NONE OF US WANT TO BECOME EXTINCT LIKE THE DINOSAURS!

Lastly, I mean this with no malice towards anyone but let's do ourselves a tremendous favor because it's about our Survival to me!

Not only we still support Asian Businesses who kick us in the butt, talk to us any kind of way and give bad customer service but businesses of other races ( Middle Eastern, Arabs, Whites, etc. ) do it as well delivering bad service. I have experience this as well. I learned over time not to give my money to people who disrepects me, especially non black businesses. I love my black people. Please, Please we must wake up and support our own who gives us great service. Please give Black business a chance and please don't let one bad experience from a black business like the author indicated hinder you from doing business with other black businesses.

I am constantly trying to find black businessess. I will always try them but just like any business I would expect them to provide good service. I don't know what it is going to take for black businessess to pick up the pieces and spread like a tsunami but we really need it to happen. One business at a time pulling up the next one right behind them. I don't mean any type of business quality, affordable, friendly businesses. I wanted to share something. There are several Asian owned food businesses that will sell "soul food"- I won't buy it! We have to stop supporting all businesses that don't give us a fair chance!

These days there more bad business then the norm. Why? to much hurt and pain in the people running the business. Why? No $$$, No homes, No Jobs, and among other pain. Each business is a business, but it's how you treat yourself and your business. It don't matter what color you are. All businesses should hold INTEGRITY AND RESPECT! I want to do business with the person/people behind the business. I don't want to do business with the $$$ they make. I have seen some of those businesses, in ALL COLORS. But the people behind them NOTHING BUT GREED!!!

Honestly, I have heard black people show disrespect towards black businesses. I have only had wonderful experiences, so I think it may have to do with their own unfulfilled desires that manifest that negativity! I actually prefer black businesses, they work so hard for our money, how can I not support it?

I often think that black people have the misconception that they will be treated unfairly in a black business. For some reason we have a tendency to think blacks are rude, more expensive and not knowledgeable of their products. I suggest that we just try a black business, just like we do everyone else, and make a judgement for yourself. When it comes to business everyone should be treated the same, if they don't make the cut, then go elsewhere. I guarantee you that a Korean owned business can't tell you what product to use on your hair or skin, yet we take their advice everyday, and they usually have not used one product that they sell to us, but we will bypass a black owned store to run to theirs. Something is wrong with that picture, and we need to ask ourselves why we do that, instead of giving a brother or sister at least a shot.

I had the pleasure of staying right around the corner from Therapy Wine Bar during my visit about a week or so ago. It's a small place but very cool and relaxing if you just want to chill out for an hour or two or perfect for a 1st date. I was there with 2 of my best friends and we really enjoyed it. The evening we were there there was a clothing line launch party so they offered a free glass of Sangria which was pretty good. After that we all decided to try a different martini. All of them were delicious and hit the spot! We also ordered the guacamole, meatballs and "steak" sliders. The only complaint I would have is about the sliders...they are what I would call a steakum type meat but I think they should just make little burgers instead but flip side...they were pretty good. The next time I come to NY and stay in BK I will definitely go back. Oh and our server was a cute little thing...I thought she was a kid at first lol but she assured us she was grown. :)

Recently our company created a map directory which outlines the proximity of businesses in the GreaterHarlemNYC area. We market those businesses, by allowing them the chance to get exposure on a product which is seen globally. Our product has taken nearly four years to create. Many that have seen it have said it is superior to anything they have ever seen.

But here is the catch. It contains dual maps, is laminated, and also, has a layout that allows it to function as a poster. My question is why someone would expect to get this for free andor request a discount when so much effort and time has been invested. This would not be a "requirement" at a white own business, as we would pay the price without question.

Don't assume that our product or service does not have value. Educate yourselves on what we have taken time to create. Your dollars are going back into your community when you make these purchases. That means helping to reduce black male unemployment, which is at 50%. This means allowing someone to educate a child of color that is being mentored.

Will Macy's, Bloomindales, Gucci, or Louis Vuitton make that gaurantee and hold to it. Think about it. Then take corrective action

I judge each business
individually. Case in point. One black guy came up to me at a gas
station some time ago and tried to give me his card, he sold Indian
Weave hair. I was not interested. His response to me was " You are tore
up anyway" I had just left my office job so I was still in business
attire so really?? Oh yeah that would definitely make me want to buy
from him in the future. For every potential customer you insult or
offend you lose up to 10 potential customers and guys like him don't see
that. I have several friend who wear weaves and I would never give him a
referral. NEVER. Another black guy approached me in the
mall a few days later and the conversation went something like this "Hi
Miss, my partner and I sell Indian hair at wholesale prices." Me:
"Sorry I can't purchase any at this time" Him: "Well here is my card
perhaps you have friends who could use our products, we also deliver
door to door as well. Have a great day miss." VERY PROFESSIONAL. I
would buy hair from him in a New York minute. I still have his card. He
was pleasant to talk to and I promised myself if I will pass his name
on if my friend ever ask about weaving hair. We should not
give up on black businesses because of one bad incident, however it
does not mean that we should feel obligated to support a business that
treats us disrespectfully. Support the ones that demonstrate a
professional demeanor with their customers and encourage others to buy
from them. Some may disagree with me and feel you should support a black
business no matter how they treat you for the sake of unity. If you
feel that way then more power to you. I for one would never give that
first guy a dime of my hard earned money after he insulted me in front
of other customers but I would give it to the second guy and I would
tell all my friends about him and encourage them to buy from him. I
promote the black businesses that are worthy of support because if I
refer my friends to a business that I know has a reputation for not
treating their customers well, they will not trust my judgement with
future recomendations. It is all relative.

o When we
encounter poor service anywhere, we should at least let the owner know so that
they will have the opportunity to improve. Unfortunately, some of our
businesses are not aware they are giving poor service because they do not
invest in leadership and business workshops. In addition, some of us do not
know we are receiving poor service because we have come to accept what we get.
Therefore, that business thinks they are doing OK. I try to find a similar
B.O.B. to support, but I at least let the first one know what it would take for
me to return.

I've rarely met someone who swore off all BOB's because of a poor experience at one. I actually don't know anyone who's sworn off BOB's at all. I do know many folks who continue to support BOB's despite a SLEW of bad experiences, indicating that poor customer service seems to be an issue and yet black customers continue to return to these businesses due to some sense of loyalty. This in fact gives these BOB's the impression that the way they do business is working just fine. And the reference to Asian stores seems to be misplaced as well. Folks shop at what's convenient and accessible. If Asian (and I assume we're referring to corner stores and hair stores) are the only establishments that are accessible, obviously folks will continue to shop there; it's a lack of other accessible options rather than a conscious decision to support "others." Again, I think the problem is a sense of entitlement- BOB's feel entitled to black customers and the quality of service and customer appreciation simply isn't there.
